XR Art Space

A WebXR framework for linking physical and digital art spaces

www.artincommon.de

XR Art Space is a framework developed in 2021 to create WebXR experiences of artistic sensibility — linking physical art spaces to their digital counterparts through extended reality. The research investigates how net and physical spaces of art can coexist: not as documentation of each other, but as simultaneous, interconnected environments that expand what a space can be and who can inhabit it.

Research Focus

Physical art spaces are bounded by geography and access. Digital spaces are boundless but often lack presence. XR Art Space explores the threshold between them — building tools and aesthetics for experiences that require both:

  • Spatial translation — mapping real exhibition spaces into navigable WebXR environments with artistic intent, not just virtual tours
  • Presence without displacement — allowing remote participation that preserves the relational quality of physical encounters
  • Artistic sensibility in XR — moving beyond utility (360° photos, product previews) toward spatial experiences with compositional and conceptual depth

Proof of Concept: ArtInCommon

artincommon.de served as the first deployment — a platform framing art as a network of relationships and encounters where virtual and physical space affect each other. Community-driven, it connects artists across disciplines, dissolving individual authorship in favor of cooperative proposals. The WebXR layer extends this into space: encounters that exist neither fully online nor fully in a room, but in the link between them.
